PASTOR’S COLUMN
“Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I’m not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant, but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue. So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what to say.” Exodus 4:10-12, NKJV
“Go, and So Will I”
There is in each of us the ability to become more than we ever could imagine. Sometimes the deficits we perceive before us seem insurmountable. A person may struggle for some indeterminate amount of time, worrying about what they think is a failure or insecurity on their part. Some circumstances in life may chip away at a person’s inner being, causing them to resign themselves to limited effort toward a certain goal. Fear and uncertainty could paralyze a person, preventing them from ever moving toward a challenge which could fulfill their destiny. But for another Voice that speaks more clearly and profoundly than our own, life would seem cynical. Moses is known and respected as a great leader and liberator of his people, the ancient Hebrews. But it took Moses eighty years to become reconciled to the plans and the potential God had prepared for him. The first forty years of his life, Moses lived as a prince, in the posh surroundings of the King of Egypt’s family compound. But for the second forty years, Moses lived along the rugged terrains of Midian, as a husband, father, and fugitive from Egypt. It was in that place, where God (Yahweh) summoned Moses to his new destiny as liberator for his fellow Hebrews suffering in Egypt. When the Voice reached Moses on the arid desert floor, there were fears and insecurities that plagued Moses. In the response to God’s call. Moses immediately pronounced to God a litany of what he “could not do well.” God remained with Moses where He found him, until Moses lingered with God enough to find himself. God assured Moses, a way “would be found” for him to complete his tasks. It’s not always what we can’t do that compromises our efforts. It is what God can do with us; despite our limitations; failures, and lack of confidence!
