PASTOR’S COLUMN

“2nd Sunday – Amazing Things Ahead!”
As much as we may assume things are always the same, life is fluid; it is marked by change. Joshua, who was a young boy when the Israelites left their place of slavery in Egypt was now an older, yet promising young leader of an emerging nation. After decades of wandering in arid land regions, the people were on the verge of entering the land of Cannan, promised to them by their God. As was the situation with leaving Egypt, they were confronted with having to crossover waters, which provided a great challenge. After facing years of food shortages, illness, and eminent threats from neighboring clans in whose territory they found themselves, Joshua and his people were confronted with a Jordan River that was at flood-stage when they reached their crossing point. So often in life we come right to the edge of claiming some great promise, or answer to a pray, when some unexpected difficulty arises. We must be assured that in such times, God will notforsake us, although we’re often prone to think so. The people were told to follow the procession led by Levites carrying the Ark of the Covenant, a holy symbol of God’s presence. They were to follow the Levite officers behind the Ark, because this was the path they were to take in crossing the Jordan River. The people wereto stay in the path because they had never gone that way before. The spiritual insight we gain from this is, we must follow God’s instructions, especially in a Year we have not lived before. God promises His children “amazing” things when we trust Him and follow His instructions. The Year before us is young, yet the days “are swift.” Joshua instructed the people at the advent of a new future to, “Set yourselves apart for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things!” We should all resolve to give God first in our lives at all times!
