PASTOR’S COLUMN
“The angel said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through the prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a son, and they will call Him Immanuel, which means, God is with us.” Matthew 1:20b-23, NLT
“Facing Fear, Finding Faith!”
Fear has dogged the trail of humans from the beginning of civilization. The type of fear we refer to is the kind which brings a level of anguish or apprehension. Worry pervades the spirit, and a person is left wondering what options they must have to mitigate the consequences of some act or event that caused fear itself. The Scriptures give us the sense, this is where Joseph was, when he went to sleep that night worried about the dilemma he found himself in. Prior to falling asleep, Joseph was consumed with what he thought was the only option he had to protect him and Mary from the horrible penalties levied on a couple who broke off their engagement. The ancient system of betrothal was governed by the father of the intended bride, along with the elders of a village. Physical relations were forbidden, although the couples were permitted to live in a parent’s house, until the father of the bride “pronounced” the couple “matrimonial bound.” There was no question about the integrity of Mary or Joseph. Each of them was said to live a “just” and “devout” life. Contrary to what some observes believe, Joseph at no time made a “rash’ decision to release Mary. He “thought about” the only option his community and the Law provided. The unexpected and troubling challenge that entered their, otherwise, healthy relationship accompanied Joseph to bed. God never leaves His children in dark places forever. An angel was dispatched to meet Joseph in a dream. This divine emissary assured joseph that Mary’s pregnancy was by divine plan. The Holy Spirit has gently placed the infant Messiah in her womb. This act was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. In facing his fears, Joseph found his faith in the promises of God. These divine promises can neither be rescinded nor prevented. Although any of us could topple from the cliff of fear and doubt; wings of faith will give us a safe landing!
