Lesson 25

Lesson 25, Psalm 121:1-8 NLT: This short psalm is among a collection (Psalms 120-134), where the title listed above them is a Hebrew word meaning “ascending” or “going up.” Psalm 121, the second great work in the collection, is like Psalm 120, a Lament. Here the psalmist is concerned about protection and the preservation of life. The pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the high Holy days and festivals often was a meandering route, filled with uncertain dangers. The Psalmist asks a rhetorical question: “Where does my help come from?” The question anticipates the answer would be. “My help comes from the mountains (or steep hills). The psalmist knows this is not correct. He affirms, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Here verses 1 and 2 set the tone for the rest of this short psalm. The emphasis is on God, who is Lord and Creator as the source of all help. In ancient times, people resorted to idolatry. God warned His people against seeking help from the idolatrous shrines, which were commonly found on mountains, or the top of steep hills. The prophet Hosea warned Israel of such practices: “They offer sacrifices to idols on the mountaintops. They go up into the hills to burn incense…” (Hosea 4:13a, NLT). The idols were images carved from wood or stone; they had no life. In contrast the God of Israel is alive, present, and active. It is in God the psalmist places his trust. This Lord protects us from all evil; and preserves our lives!
