PASTOR’S COLUMN

11 “Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so He spread His wings to take them up and carried them safely on His pinions.  12 The Lord alone guided them, they followed no foreign gods.” Deuteronomy 32:11-12, NLT

  “We Are Known!”

A life without a memory of the significant people who edged our lives forward could cause inner chaos, and injury to our spirits. There are many troubled souls who wander aimlessly in life because they, unfortunately, have very little connection to the person or persons who shaped their formative years. Constant prayer and compassion must be extended to people for whom the trauma of abandonment or abuse has sent them into seasons of depression and loneliness. In Deuteronomy 31, which is called The Song of Moses,” the deliverer of Israel speaks prophetically to future generations. Moses looks into the future and foresees that an emergent generation will prosper but will abandon their allegiance to Yahweh (God) in favor of self-interests. How soon do humans forget the hands that formed us. Moses urges a future generation to abandon the false gods of this world and return to the teachings of the parents and elders who understand the teachings of God and the spiritual values we are to possess. Moses, perhaps thinking of his own mother Jacobed, who by the providence of God, nurtured him during his formative years – relates God’s care and protection of us as being “like the eagle who hoovers over her chicks.” To observe the mother at work in the care and guidance of her children is a wonder to behold. The rousing was a method of preparing the chicks to one day leave the nest; discover their wings, and soar into their future. The very top of the eagle’s broad wings, pinons, is a place of safety and protection. Our God, like a mother, carries us and prepares us for the winds that will lift us as we soar ahead! In extoling God’s greatness, Moses also honors our mothers. Our mothers knew us long before we knew ourselves. Isn’t this like the very nature of our great God?
