PASTOR’S COLUMN
23 “ And when God counted him as righteous. It wasn’t just for Abraham’s benefit. It was recorded 24 for our benefit too, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in Him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was handed over to die because of our sins, and He was raised to life to make us right with God.”
Romans 4:22-25, NLT
“Post-Resurrection – Power of Belief!”
The will to believe in what really matters in life is attainable but is very often illusive. Human nature will easily grasp what is sensational, false, and alluring – only to reap their dire consequences. This unfortunate irony is not just among the weak and vulnerable but manifest itself also among reasonably spiritually minded people of goodwill. If we remain with the events which followed the Resurrection of Jesus, the first instances of fear, misjudgment and doubt are among the disciples. Thomas of course doubted the visit of Jesus with the disciples later in the evening of the Resurrection and demanded forensic proof of the Savior’s existence. When Jesus reappeared to the disciples a week later, the shrill demands of Thomas were granted. In the wake of this discovery, Thomas was overwhelmed. Guilt and shame aside, at least Thomas had enough sense to reverence the Lord. Those immortal words of Jesus both haunt and hang heavy over the conscience to this very day: “Thomas you believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen me but believe.” With those words, Jesus gives us all a way forward when He said to Thomas. “Stop doubting. Believe!” As the Apostle Paul said of Abraham, because he believed he gained a right relationship with God who raised Jesus from the dead. It is not seeing that we believe. It is in believing that we come to see clearly our Savior and the many promises He has for us. 17th-century historian, Thomas Fuller, was wrong when he said, “Seeing is believing and feeling is truth.” Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” It is belief in Jesus, we find our way.
