PASTOR’S COLUMN
1 “Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking,
2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw His star as it rose, and we have come to worship Him.”
10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!
11 They entered the house and saw the child with His mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod.” Matthew 2:1-2;10-12, NLT
“5th Sunday in Advent - Adoration!”
To worship Christ, our Lord and Messiah, is an act of great adoration. We admire each other, but we adore Christ Jesus. To give adoration to people in the sense we give to the Lord is both futile and dangerous. In the Gospel of Matthew, we see an earthly king who is furious in an attempt to kill the Child-Messiah, whom he suspects will have more popularity than himself, and succeed him on the throne. Jealousy has been the ruin of many lives. Such behavior stems from deep-seated insecurities and in the case of King Herod, a maniacal spirit with no empathy for others. The news of the Birth of Jesus did not initially concern Herod, until many months – or by some accounts nearly two years later, there were audible rumors of this Child being Messiah and King of the Jews. Herod’s escalating rage at this notion coincided with visiting astrologers from Persia, who came seeking the Messiah they had read about in the prophecies. Herod interviewed the group and ordered them to report back to him after they found the Messiah. The Magi. as they were called, left Herod and found the Messiah who now was a young child living in a house with His parents. Their response to Jesus was not one of academic pursuit, but of adoration. They bowed and worshipped Messiah, the only King of kings!
