PASTOR’S COLUMN
23 “Who remembers us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever.” 24 And rescues us from our enemies, For His mercy endures forever, 25 Who gives food to all flesh, For His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136:23-25, NKJV
“God Remembers and Rescues!”
One of the needs we have in life is to be remembered. To be overlooked often causes a person to lack importance and value. What is instructive in the lives of God’ people is the security in knowing that Our God does not forget us. It was early in the journey of the faithful followers of the Lord that we hear the message of divine assurance” “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, KJV). This message was first given to an emerging generation, near the death of Moses. They freed Israelites were preparing to enter Caanan, the Land of Promise. The new generation would reclaim land that was first given to their ancestors, under a treaty arranged through Abraham. There was fear in the hearts of people, because the closer they reached Cannan, they worried incessantly whether the God who protected them in the wilderness would remain with them in the new territory. God did remember the Israelites, helping them defeat all opposing kings, tribes, and tribal states they encountered. It was these victories King David celebrated in Psalm 136. He thanks God, “Who remembers us in our lowly state, for His mercy endures forever.” (v. 23, NKJV). David had instructed the Levite Singers to sing this psalm, which Solomon had the people do during the Dedication Service of the Temple in the 11th year of his reign as King of Israel. The hymn also echoes the fact that God remembers us and rescues us from all danger. (Psalm 136:24, NKJV). The Hebrew word chalats, is translated “rescues,” The term means to “be pulled from;” and “to be prepared for battle.” In remembering us, God protects us from the enemy and will not permit the adversary to defeat us. How wonderful it is to know our God’s presence and enduring mercy will always be with us. Give thanks to God always!
