PASTOR’S COLUMN
31 “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us , who can ever be against us?...37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us.” Romans 8:31;37, NLT
“4th Sunday – More Than What Confronts! Us!”
The Scriptures provide us with different and wonderfully appropriate language to help us understand God’s divine plan for our lives. Here in the Epistle to the Romans, Christians living in regions controlled by the ancient Roman Empire were assured that their faith in Jesus Christ provided them with safety in their relationship with God. The empire prided itself on military strength and conquest as the only means of assuring peace and hope to its inhabitants, The Apostle Paul reminded Christians that our hope and peace is in Jesus Christ, and not in military might. So the Apostle used rhetorical language when he addressed Christians. This meant he posed a question, where the answer was obvious. Paul asked, “If God is for us, who can be against us? “Although confronted by persistent dangers and conflicts, Paul was transparent about controversies affecting the lives of Christians. After listing the inevitable issues Christians faced, he boldly says, “No. despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us.” The King Lames Version reads, “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Because God gives us overwhelming victory, we are “more than” what confronts us. As we live in this uncertain world, we are confident in knowing that through Christ what we have is much more than what life’s trials could ever do to us. One day even the Roman Emperor “bowed his knee” to Jesus Christ, and so will many who will come to know Him. It is with spiritual confidence that we Christians should affirm Paul’s exhortation: “I am convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love.” (Rom. 8:38) Absolutely nothing. To conqueror is to attain more than any adversary or foe!
