PASTOR’S COLUMN

²¹ “While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you.  ²² Repent, all of you who forget  me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. ²³ But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”

“Accountability Still Works!”

In a chaotic world that seems to be headed for annihilation the question frequently asked is, “Why is God silent in all this confusion?” The questions belies a perception that God has become absent during all the turmoil we face. Such a perception is both misleading and false. Yet, some people are content with the notion that some misdeeds, sins, and acts of behavior which are against the laws of God, are acceptable. If not, at the very least some believe the manic behavior we see in leaders is at least tolerated.    This notion has given rise to a world in which what is right, just, and good is determined on a horizontal plane (human), rather than on a vertical plane (Godly). This shallow yet influential thinking is not new. Its origin is as old as human civilization itself. We hear this language in the beguiling words of the serpent in the Creation narrative, who tells Adam and Eve if they ignore God’s command they will not be harmed. Their decision to ignore the Creator’s warning will only cause them to become superior to God. But such a notion only led to fear and the awareness that we are naked and shameful before the loving God who created us. Asaph, for whom this psalm is attributed, labored with a deep sense of concern for the misdeeds of humankind. A person of clay and flesh himself, Asaph foresaw the human tragedy that lies ahead of our failure to be accountable to God.  In the psalm we hear the voice of God. Our God, like whom there is no other, warns us His silence does not mean His absence. God does not forget, nor excuse our wrongful deeds!
