5 “For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation.” Psalm 100:5 NLT

 “Yes, Good After All!”

In some cultures, the image of some deities can be portrayed in grotesque ways with evil expressions.  Even in the exterior design of some ancient cathedrals gargoyles are prominently placed in corners of the building. Presumably these frightening figures were believed to chase off evil spirits or demonic influences. In each instance of these expressions, the belief is that some image worst than bad or evil, could destroy evil and its tragic consequences. The God of the Scriptures is never reduced to such images. There is in the Word a recognition of bad things happening to people, sometimes for their misdeeds and sins; or as a result of some unplanned event. What is assuring is a God whose very nature is good. The sheer fact that we encounter difficult experiences along life’s journey, never eclipses, nor cancels, the goodness of our God.   When the faithful of ancient times walked long distances toward Jerusalem to worship God, their life-stories culminated into an affirmation; inherent in God’s goodness is the unfailing love and faithfulness  always expressed toward them.  Whatever was encountered, they knew God’s goodness would prevail. This is the certainty David had that he would “see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” When we truly trust God we will learn, yes. the Lord is good after all! Life experiences may  not all be good, but God is. If God were not good, evil would reign supreme in the universe. God is the constant in a shifting , uncertain world. Martin King was right when he said, “God is always able to bring some good out of evil.” God can protect us  and annihilate the very wrongs that dog our trails. What was meant for evil, God can turn the experience around for good. We should sing with the ancient pilgrims, “The Lord is good!” For all generations!
