PASTOR’S COLUMN
1 “On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” Acts 2:1-4, NLT
“A Divine Promise Kept!”
The promises of the Lord are always marked by a special time and place. In reading the Scriptures, it is fascinating and instructive to see how divine events in the lives of God’s people are always associated with time and place. During His earthly life and ministry one of the great religious seasons enjoyed by Jesus was the Feast of Weeks, which occurred 50 days after Passover. That period was met with great joyand praise, because the “first crops” of the harvest season emerged. Crops were collected, blessed, and shared with the community. The newness of these crops symbolized the advent of a better time, filled with God’s promises. As Jesus promised, on the full day of Pentecost - the feast of weeks - the Holy Spirit came to believers. The roaring sound of a windstorm provided the backdrop for thepromised Holy Spirit to come and remain in the hearts of believers. Luke describes these first Christians as needing no other evidence of the Spirit’s presence, than the “new languages” they spoke; the ability to “understand each other” in their birth languages; and the “jubilation” that caused them to engage in unity and collective praise to God. This was the result of a Promise Kept! Jesus told the disciples in Acts 1, they were to report to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of power. Evidence of that Day accompanied the newly minted apostles and believers as they gathered as One. As they took to the streets and villages, they became witnesses proclaiming Jesus as Savior and Lord. Pentecost is the heritage of every Christian. The Spirit lives in us, we are made new in Him!
