PASTOR’S COLUMN
7 “ Don’t be afraid,” David said. “I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your father, Jonathan. I will give you all the property that once belonged to your father, Jonathan. I will give you all the property that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will eat here with me at the king’s table…” And Mephibosheth, who was crippled in both feet, lived in Jerusalem and ate regularly at the king’s table.” Samuel 9:7,13 NLT
“Thankful for Any Day of Blessing!”
Few things are more rewarding in life than an unexpected blessing. A person may encounter arid days or seasons or difficulty – only to be pleasantly met by a burst of kindness that brings joy and refreshing of spirit. There are experiences a person may be compelled to endure in life, for which they are not responsible. I think of a person like Fannie Jane Crosby who as a young child had a mustard home remedy applied to her eyes, which inevitably led to permanent blindness and the loss of hearing. The remedy was recommended by a doctor in whom Fannie’s parents put their trust. Yet, the lifetime disability did not prevent Ms. Crosby from writing over 8,000 hymns. The spark of inspiration Fannie had, no doubt, was in the assurance of being close to God, whom she said, welcomed her in His presence. God has a way of giving us far more abilities and resources, than circumstances have taken from us. Any day we become aware that God is working on our behalf through the kindness of others, should be a day of blessing. The grandson was much too young to comprehend the brutal death of his father and grandfather in battle, when the nurse carrying the child accidently dropped him; destroying his ability to ever walk. But some years later when David became king of Israel, he remembered the promise he made to “show kindness” to his friend, Jonathan’s survivors. Mephibosheth was that person who received the blessing of David’s kindness. Dead muscles and tendons in his paralyzed feet, a boy sat at the king’s table. He ate, was welcomed, and thankful!
