Quiet Time: Max Lucado, Because of Bethlehem:

Love Is Born, Hope Is Here, 2020

Lesson 19

12 May  2026

John 14:15-21; 25-26, NLT:

As the disciples waited for the impartation of the Holy Spirit, they likely reflected on the promise of Jesus that the Holy Spirit would come and remain in them. Jesus told the disciples the Holy Spirit had been with them notably when Jesus sent them on missions to specific towns and villages. The time was near for the Holy Spirit to come and permanently remain in their lives. This is the promise to all who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior,  by faith through grace. When we receive Christ and obey Him as Lord, we also receive the Holy Spirit. It is required of us to demonstrate our love for Jesus, by obeying His commandments. Our lives are to show evidence of following the teachings of Christ.

Verses & Explanations for John 14:15-21;25-26 NLT:

Observe         Interpret         Apply

(Verse 15) – Love for Jesus must be demonstrated:

15 If you love me, obey my commandments.

(Verse 16) – The promise of the Holy Spirit is sure:

16  And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

(Verse 17) – The Holy Spirit comes to live in Christ’s followers. Forever:

17  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him. But you  know Him, because He lives with you now and later will be in you.”

(Verses 18-19) – Christ’s Spirit will never leave us:

18   No, I will not abandon you as orphans – I will come to you. 19   Soon the world will no longer see me, but you  will see me. Since I live, you also will live.

(Verse 20) – The Resurrection unites us with Christ:

20 When I am raised to life again,  you will know that I am in my Father  and you are in me, and I am in you.

(Verse 21) – Obedience to Christ and His Commands secures our relationship with Him and the Father:

21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.

(Verses 25-26) – The Holy Spirit represents Christ, teaching and directing us in all things. The Spirit helps us retain memory of Christ’s teachings/commands; an understanding of all things:

25 “I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.  26  But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative – that is, the Holy Spirit – He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

Further Reading:

John 16:13, NLT

13  “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth, He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

The Key Idea:

What We Believe!:

1. “Your word is a lamp to my feet  and a light to my path!” – Psalm 119:105
