“Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” Genesis 24:67, NIV

“Mothers Return In A Special Way”

The very breath of God breathes life into the Scriptures, and the voice of the Creator is heard time and again, teaching us profound lessons about the beauty of life and its meaning. Narratives and accounts of the lives of people in ancient times are not mere legends or tales; they provide us with a glimpse of human existence and how we mortals are always in need of direction from God as we navigate our lives. There is no human trait or activity that is overlooked in the sacred Word, and this is for our spiritual and moral benefit. This is why the Apostle Paul told his mentee in the faith, young Timothy: “All Scripture is inspired [breathed] by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT). Paul also reminded Timothy, his spiritual/moral character was shaped by both his mother and grandmother. They taught him the Scriptures from an early age. Speaking of mothers, throughout human history they have played a significant role in shaping our lives. The effective influence of a mother; often, is evident in a person’s character. The old poet, William Ross Wallace, said, “Keep, O keep the young heart open /Always to the breath of God! All true trophies of the ages are from mother love impearled; For the hand that rocks the cradle / Is the hand that rules the world.” Isaac, the son of promise, was thirty-seven years old when his mother, Sarah, died. For what must have been three long agonizing years, Isaac grieved mother Sarah’s departure. It is never easy to see the person who first loved, protected, and taught you, covered beneath the soil and placed into nature’s earth. Like Isaac, we appreciate the irreplaceable presence of our mothers, and their effective influence on us. God sent Rebekah into Isaac’s life and she became a special comfort. In could be, mothers remain in some special way!
